Understanding the difference between Natural Diamonds and Synthetic Diamonds

Natural diamonds are created by nature, as a result of intense temperature and pressure, formed over the course of billions of years. Synthetic diamonds go by many different names — lab-grown, lab-created, lab-made and even  created moissanite. These types of diamonds are created in a laboratory, often produced in a matter of weeks.

Value
The value of these diamonds changes over time. With lab-grown diamonds dropping in value, and natural diamonds historically rising in value, diamond purchasers should understand what makes a diamond “real” might not be what you think it is.

Sustainability
A report from the Diamond Producers Association affirms that natural diamonds are, in truth, better for the environment than synthetic and lab-grown diamonds, due to the rigorous carbon process of producing lab diamonds.

Look
Lab diamonds and mined diamonds, such as Hēbē, are often seen identical to the naked eye. Their identity can usually only be determined by gemological laboratories using specialized instruments.

Which Diamond should you buy?

Diamonds and other forms of jewelry are often seen as an investment nowadays thus there should be a sense that purchasing a piece of jewelry should retain its value over the years. If this is your priority, you may opt for natural diamonds. With 35 years of industry experience, Karat World assures you that we only showcase and market natural diamonds. Diamonds sold at Karat World are certified by gem laboratories such as GIA (Gemological Institute of America) or IGL (International Gemological Laboratory) also accompanying the stone.
